To help make our Monthly Nuchaashii Gatherings more easily accessible to the local community and to emphasize the original intention of making connections and building fellowship, we will be doing a trial run of a new schedule and format. Meanwhile, our commitment to maintaining the online connections made during the pandemic will continue by hosting “hybrid” gatherings every other month. FEBRUARY'S THEME: SANSHIN NU FII (SANSHIN DAY) In celebration of Sanshin nu Fii or Sanshin no Hi (Sanshin Day) in Okinawa, we will be hosting special hands-on workshops geared toward first-timers, beginners, and intermediate players! The goal is to provide a comfortable and welcoming space to learn and play, especially for folks who have never picked up a sanshin before. Sanshin is a traditional stringed instrument that is indigenous to the Ryūkyū Islands, recognizable for its snakeskin covering. Every year on March 4th, Okinawa celebrates Sanshin nu Fii with special events and performances throughout the islands. The date was chosen because of the Japanese pronunciations of “3” and “4” – “san” and “shi” – resembling “sanshin” (similar commemorative days include “Shiisaa Day” on March 3rd and “Gooyaa Day” on May 8th). A limited number of sanshin will be available to use at the event, but those who have access to an instrument are encouraged to bring it. Please save the dates for the next few gatherings:
