Curated by OAA members and special guests, we’ll share songs inspired by themes like personal connections, significant seasons, specific islands and regions, and more. If you don't know many traditional songs or modern songs by Ryūkyūan performers, we hope that these informal recommendations will help with building your library! If you're already aware of many of the songs featured, we hope you will enjoy the personal connections and curated themes! In April 2023, three young folks from Okinawa who call themselves “Tabinchu” (meaning “travelers” in Uchinaaguchi) visited Southern California to volunteer at the OAA and connect with local Okinawans! One year later, they shared their favorite Okinawan songs with us. Check out their Instagram page to follow their international adventures (click here). Here are some pictures from their Southern California visit: AINO: “Kajadifuu/Kagiyadefuu Bushi” (Classical) 「かぎやで風節」(古典音楽) I sang a parody song for my friend's birthday and she was happy! I've been singing it every birthday since then. ♪ 友だちの誕生日に替え歌をして歌ったら喜んでくれました！それ以来誕生日の度に歌っています。♪ MEGU: “Hiyamikachi Bushi” (Folk)「ひやみかち節」(民謡) I was surprised to see an elementary school student playing the sanshin so well at the Itoman market! I also have fond memories of dancing with everyone at the market ♪ The fast tempo rhythm is wonderful. 😆 糸満市の市場で小学生の子が上手に三線を弾いていてびっくりしました！市場の人みんなで踊ったのもいい思い出です ♪ テンポの速いリズムが素敵。😆 TSUKASA: “Ashimiji Bushi” (Folk)「汗水節」(民謡) I'm from outside the prefecture, and this is my favorite song that I heard when I first joined Eisaa. Speaking of Eisaa, there are many fast-tempo songs, but this song has a slow tempo, but it feels great to dance Eisaa to this song on the night of Obon. 県外出身の僕が、初めてエイサーに参加したときに聞いたお気に入りの曲です。エイサーといえば、テンポの速い曲が多いですが、この曲は曲のテンポは遅いですが、旧盆の夜にこの曲でエイサーを踊るととても気持ちがいいです。 Editor's Note: The following recording shows various eisaa/yeisaa groups performing "Ashimiji Bushi" in their own styles at the 2014 Eisaa Matsuri in Okinawa: KANCHAN: “Bashōfu” (Folk)「芭蕉布」(民謡) I remembered this song while floating on a beautiful beach in Cuba. The blue sky and sea reminded me of the scenery of Okinawa, and I thought this song connected the world. キューバの綺麗なビーチに浮かびながらこの曲を思い出しました。空と海の青が沖縄の風景を思い起こさせ、この曲が世界を繋いでいると思いました。 This post is for non-for-profit, educational, or entertainment purposes only.
