WAYS TO SUPPORT
Dear Friends,
We are so fortunate to have a permanent place to call home - a place to gather with friends and fellow shimanchu, a place for learning, a place to welcome visitors, and even a place for entertainment and eating!
The vision of creating this home by our pioneers was realized with the first “clubhouse” in 1954 - a two-story residence in the Arlington Heights area of Los Angeles. Fast forward to 1999, and the OAA purchased two buildings in Gardena which would be the foundation to which other parcels of land would be added. Today, OAA owns and manages four buildings and five tenants!

This year marked 25 years since the “clubhouse” became the “OAA Center”. We now also house an office and library that is overseen by staff and dedicated volunteers. The expanded space made it possible to amplify our events and we have hosted amazing events like our popular Bazaar fundraisers, which many outside of our membership look forward to.
In the past 25 years, becoming property owners meant that our duties and responsibilities - and expenses - grew, too. We have had to bear new expenses for repair and maintenance, as well as property taxes, for our aging facilities. Recently, we had announced that our offices were going to move to a different floor, and this year, we finally were able to expand our office and library area. We are lucky to have the funds in reserve to move forward on this improvement, but it has taken a chunk of our reserves. For this reason, we will be launching a multi-year capital campaign soon.
In the meantime, we are kick starting the capital fundraiser with this year’s Year-End Giving Campaign. Last year, all of our wonderful donors helped us to raise over $26,000 through donations, merchandise and Saataa Andaagii sales! We sincerely and humbly ask for your support again for one last donation by the end of 2024 - and hope to see you at the December 8 Saataa Andaagii fundraiser!
Wishing you all a happy holidays!

SAATAA ANDAAGII SALE
Just like last year’s Saataa Andaagii Sale, we will be encouraging younger generations to cook alongside expert members to learn from them and gain more hands-on experience!
When preserving and perpetuating culture, perfection is never the goal. We aim to make our culture more accessible to young people by inviting them to actively participate in it.

MEET ADAM,
one of our younger members who found the OAA while searching for information about his Uchinaanchu roots. Because of the OAA’s activities, Adam’s life was impacted in a meaningful way. We want to continue to provide resources to people like Adam who are interested in learning about their ancestral roots, and to raise up members in our community who can learn and pass on the culture, history, languages, traditions, and values of the Ryūkyū Islands. Join Adam in supporting the OAA and ensuring its future! If you have the means to do so, please consider making a 2023 tax-deductible monetary donation, purchasing a fundraiser item, or simply sharing our fundraiser with family and friends – every little bit counts! |
