2007-2008 Kempi Scholarship Applications Available

The Okinawa Prefectural Government and the International Foundation sponsors KEMPI SCHOLARSHIPS for a one-year study at the University of Ryukyus (http://www.u-ryukyu.ac.jp/en/index.html), Okinawa Prefectural University of the Arts (http://www.okigei.ac.jp/) or the Meio University (http://www.meio-u.ac.jp/).
The objectives of the Kempi Scholarships are to promote international exchange between Okinawa and the Okinawans abroad and through their one-year study in Okinawa, the Kempi recipients will enhance their understanding of the Japanese culture, industry, education and society with opportunities to interact with the local Okinawans. All expenses will be paid by the Okinawa International Exchange & Human Resources Development Foundation (OIHF).

Period of study: April 2007 – March 2008

Eligibility rules: Must be a U.S. citizen of Okinawan descent,

  • In good health,
  • high school graduate between ages 18 & 30 (born after March 31, 1977)
  • have a proficiency of the Japanese language
  • sponsored by a Kenjinkai in the U.S.

Application deadline: Postmark December 20, 2006 to the OAA Center, 16500 S. Western Avenue, #203, Gardena, CA 90247

Selection Meeting: Saturday, December 23, 2006
Deadline to Okinawa: Tuesday, December 26, 2006

**We just received via email the instructions and application forms for the 2006 - 2007 Kempi Scholarship. If you are interested in applying, please call the OAA Office (310)532-1929 or email mensore@earthlink.net. Hard copies of applications can be sent, (downloaded) or sent as via email. Specific questions regarding the scholarship or the universities may be directed to Yuko in the OAA Office.
