Obituary
- Mr. Shukyoku Kamiyama
March 30, 1921 - March 9, 2004
Funeral Service was held Saturday, March 13, 2004 at the Jorei Fellowship
LA Center.

Upon their arrival
in Los Angeles, Shukyoku and Ethel worked actively in the Okinawa Association
of America, Inc. While they lived in Hawaii, he served as president
of the Nago Association and the Hawaii Okinawa Kenjinkai. So we were
fortunate to have his vast experiences to develop a stronger kenjinkai
here in L.A. He served for 10 years as the Cultural Chairman to preserve
the Okinawan culture and promote awareness to the American society.
He actively participated in the Building Fund fundraising efforts in
Okinawa. He is the only Kenjinkai president to serve for 6 years in
1971, 1972, 1979, 1986, 1987, and 1988.
He believed in the
OAA's goals to support and promote the appreciation of the Okinawan
culture, heritage and history for our future generations. He often told
us (my brother, Ken Kamiya and I) that we need to get the younger generation
(Nisei and older Sansei) actively involved in order
to grow into a more effective organization. Now we must carry on this
legacy that Shukyoku and others like him have passed on to us.
Shukyoku and my Dad, Charley
Masuei Kamiya became best friends in their participation in the Okinawa
Kenjinkai. There are many of you who also have developed deep friendships
with Shukyoku over the years. We have lost a dear friend and mentor
but tonight we also celebrated his active life of 82 years.
Goodbye Shukyoku
Kamiyama. You have deeply touched so many of our lives!
(By Helene Shimane - part of her eulogy on that day).
