On Sunday, December 29, 2002, the OAA Geino-Bu (Performing Arts) held
its Installation Banquet at the Sea Empress Seafood Restaurant in Gardena,
Calfiornia. After a sumptuous luncheon, Mieko Shima, outgoing president,
thanked everyone for their support during her two terms as president.
She presented appreciation certificates to the officers who assisted
her during her presidency. A "moment of silence" was observed
for members who had passed away recently, including the late Vice-President
Fumio Itokazu. Ms. Shima also recognized three special people, Haruo
Yamashiro, Sam Shimane and Doreen Whiteley, with Certificates of Appreciation
for their generous support and the selfless contribution of their time
and expertise in service of the Geino-Bu.

Ms. Shima congratulated
the newly elected President Sachiko Arakaki, and handed the gavel to
her. Ms. Arakaki, in turn, presented Ms. Shima with a Certificate of
Appreciation for her dedication and inspiring leadership. Ms. Arakaki
thanked everyone and asked for their continued support and assistance
during the coming year. She then introduced the new officers for the
2003/2004 term.
This formal program
was followed by lively Okinawan folk music and karaoke singing, as we
all looked forward to another successsful, rewarding new year.
