2002 Bonenkai
By Helene Shimane
(Japanese
.pdf also available)
It is true that
the Okinawans know how to work hard and also to play hard because that’s
what we did at our annual “Bonenkai” on Sunday, December
8, 2002. About 100 people celebrated the end of the Year of the Horse
– 2002 in the Shoan and Shizuko Yamauchi Building.
This year, we worked
so hard cleaning up, recycling, painting parties to get the café
building ready for its dedication as the Shoan and Shizuko Yamauchi
Building (before he passed away) and many more long hours to make preparations
for all of our scheduled activities. It often felt like the OAA Center
was our “second home” because we spent so much time there.
However the “Bonenkai” was our time to sit back, relax…..enjoy
the delicious potluck…..and party!
We were the entertainment…..many
members sang karaoke (Japanese, Okinawan songs) and even “You
Are My Sunshine” in memory of OAA Past President George Sankey.
Masao and Itsumi’s skit made us laugh and wish for more. It gave
us this special time to talk to old friends and remember the good old
days. We especially thank our many hardworking volunteers. It makes
all the hours of hard work we put in throughout this year worthwhile
because of your generous and continuous support the whole year through!
All of us make up the Okinawa
Association of America, Inc., so United We Stand ready for 2003 –
Year of the Sheep.
