About the OAA in Japanese | Committee Members

The Okinawa Association of America, Inc. (OAA) is a 501c(3) nonprofit corporation. Its purpose is to preserve and perpetuate, as well as to promote the appreciation of Okinawan culture through education and local and international exchanges. It also promotes mutual friendship and aid to its members.

A century ago, the OAA was known as the Nanka Okinawa Kenjinkai. Throughout the decades, the organization changed its name, structure and mission to reflect the needs of the era. During World War II, the organization was temporarily dismantled as most of its members were placed in internment camps.

Returning from the camps after the war, the club and its members in Los Angeles worked on not only rebuilding their own lives but also organizing relief efforts for war-damaged Okinawa. Our Issei members appealed to Okinawans in other cities and organized the collection and shipping of materials and money to the homeland. From 1945 to about 1953, the organization's activities were devoted to rebuilding efforts in Okinawa. In 1954, the group was reorganized as the Okinawa Club of America. The name of the organization was changed, in 1986, to the Hokubei Okinawa Kenjinkai to emphasize a tie to the Okinawa Prefecture. In 1994, the organization was renamed the Okinawa Association of America (OAA).

北米沖縄県人会について

OKINAWA ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA, INC.（ＯＡＡ）(aka 北米沖縄県人会）は税法５０１(ｃ)（３）条に該当する非営利団体である。

目的は会員相互の親睦融和と福祉増進を高め、教育、地域社会そして海外との文化交流を通して沖縄の文化を保存、継承し又、永久に存続するという主旨のもとで運営されている。

１００年前、ＯＡＡは「南加沖縄県人会」として知られていた。幾世代を通して、この団体は時代に適応する為に名前を改称し､体質も変わり又、建物も購入した。第二次世界大戦が勃発し大部分の会員は強制立ちぬきとなり収容所に抑留され、この団体は自然解消となった。

戦後、収容所から帰還してロサンゼルス市方面に移住した沖縄系人は自分の生活復興に力を注ぐばかりでなく戦争で被害にあった沖縄の人々の救助にも当たった。

一世は母県，沖縄の復興の為に他州とも連絡、結成し救助活動を行い物質や金銭面で援助をし船で輸送した。1945年から1953年にかけての沖縄への復興に非常に献身的であった。

１９５４年、この団体は｢北米沖縄クラブ」として命名した。又、1986年に「北米沖縄県人会」 に改名し沖縄県との絆が深まる時点で、1994年にこの団体はＯＡＡとして改名し た。
